"Of Hyperion we are told that he was the first to understand, by diligent attention and observation, the movement of both the sun and the moon and the other stars, and of the seasons as well, in that they are caused by these bodies, and to make these facts known to others. For these reason Hyperion would forever be known as the father of these bodies, for it was he who had brought forth the speculation about them and their nature."
In January 2007, plans began in the small town of Pacific, Washington, to launch a new chapter of the Colonial Defense Forces. In the months that followed, many discussions took place, that would see these plans begin to take shape.
First came the decision that it was to be a Mercury Class Battlestar. One of the finest and most advanced ships in the fleet. That was the easy part. The advanced ship wide systems, size, armaments and technologies of a Mercury Class vessel would prove a benefit to the crew.
Then, came the tough part. This Battlestar would need a name. But not just any name, it needed a name that was fitting of the course it would soon undertake. A name that had a purpose, a meaning, a history to it. After much deliberation, It was decided that this fine ship would be named after the Greek Titan, Hyperion. Scanning the vast Colonial database, a small piece of information was stumbled upon by the future crew. The verse that was found read simply:
As a wise man once said, "There are those that believe that life here, began out there". Armed with those famous words, there could be no more fitting name to give the Hyperion, as it is the sun, the moon, and the stars that guide our vessel, as we strive to keep humanity alive.
On May 15, 2007, the Hyperion was commissioned as part of the Colonial Defense Forces Third Fleet. Thus beginning the adventures of the crew. The journey thus far has been one of friendship, good times and a few hardships along the way. The prospects of what are to come are rather intriguing. The crew members aboard the Hyperion consist of a wide variety of people that are involved in all kinds of science-fiction, fantasy, horror, anime and many other forms of fandom. Chapter meetings and events range from convention attendance and participation to charitable events, community activities and service projects.
